This guide works with most tiled print-at-home sewing patterns. Always follow any file-specific instructions supplied by the pattern designer.

Print one page before the whole pattern

    Save and open the PDF

    Download the print-at-home pattern file to your computer. Open the saved PDF in your chosen PDF app instead of printing from a browser preview.

    Choose the size layers, if available

    In Adobe Acrobat Reader, open the Layers panel, hide sizes you do not need, and keep every shared, text, label, or markings layer visible. If you grade between sizes, keep both sizes visible.

    Open the print dialog on Mac

    In Adobe Acrobat Reader, choose File → Print. Select the physical printer, then choose Actual size under Page Sizing & Handling.

    Open the print dialog in Preview

    Choose File → Print, select the physical printer, and enter 100% for Scale. Do not select Scale to Fit. Preview may not expose PDF size layers, so use Acrobat Reader when layers are required.

    Open the print dialog on Windows

    In Adobe Acrobat Reader, choose Menu → Print or press Ctrl+P. Select the physical printer, then choose Actual size under Page Sizing & Handling.

    Check every print setting

    • Paper size matches the paper loaded in the printer.
    • Scale is Actual size or exactly 100%.
    • Fit, Shrink oversized pages, and multiple pages per sheet are off.
    • Print on both sides is off.
    • Auto portrait/landscape is on when available.
    • Only the calibration page is selected for the first print.

    Print and measure the calibration page

    Measure the inside edges of the square with a reliable ruler. Continue with the pattern only after both dimensions are correct.

Enter the width and height you measured inside the square. The A4 sheet uses millimetres; the US Letter sheet uses inches.

A0 / COPY SHOP

Printing an A0 file at a copy shop

Send the original A0 or copy-shop PDF. Ask for black-and-white line printing at 100% with no scaling, cropping, or “fit to sheet.” Do not ask the shop to enlarge the tiled A4/Letter file.

  • Confirm the number and physical size of the A0 sheets before printing.
  • Ask the operator to print the calibration area first when possible.
  • Measure the test square before leaving the shop.
  • Keep the original PDF unchanged if the file contains selectable size layers.

After the scale check

Lay the pages out in their labelled rows and columns. Trim or fold only the edges specified by the pattern designer, align the registration marks and pattern lines, then tape or glue the pages without stretching the paper.

Try the matching fix before printing another full set of pages.

The square is smaller or larger than expected

Print again from a desktop PDF app using Actual size or 100%. Turn off Fit, Shrink, Scale to Fit, and custom scaling. Confirm that the document and loaded paper use the same format.

Borders or registration marks are cut off

Confirm the correct paper size and Auto portrait/landscape. Do not enable borderless enlargement. If only content outside the printer’s physical margins is missing, check the pattern designer’s instructions before changing scale.

Some lines, labels, or fonts do not print

Try Adobe Acrobat Reader. In its advanced print settings, Print as Image can help with complex files, but repeat the calibration test afterward.

The size layers are missing

Download the file instead of opening it in a browser. Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader and use the Layers panel. Preview and browser viewers may not expose optional PDF layers.

The printer is very slow or appears stuck

Wait for the current job to finish before resubmitting it. If the file remains difficult to process, try Print as Image in Adobe Acrobat Reader and print only the test page first.

The print dialog asks where to save a file

A virtual PDF printer is selected. Return to the printer list and choose your physical printer.
